- Listen to the preview and save individual files or download the batch as a ZIP.
When WMV to MP3 is the right move
WMV is Windows Media Video, the format of older Windows recordings and presentations, and you will meet it in Movie Maker projects, old screen recorders, and archived presentations. MP3 plays in every car stereo, phone, podcast host, and upload form, so converting closes the gap between the file you have and the tool you need. Everything stays on your device while it runs, so private recordings never reach a server.
What happens to the audio inside
The converter opens the WMV file and reads a Windows Media Audio track. It decodes that audio and writes an MP3 at the bitrate you choose, which is small enough to email. The picture is ignored, so the MP3 contains sound only. Converting WMV audio to MP3 is a second lossy step for most sources, so match or exceed the source quality instead of going lower.
Size and settings
A 192 kbps MP3 uses about 1.4 MB per minute. Choose 128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps as the all-round default, and 256 or 320 kbps for music you plan to keep. The sample rate and channel layout of your WMV file are carried across, so a mono recording stays mono.
Troubleshooting and tips
WMV files protected by Windows Media DRM cannot be opened by any browser tool. Unprotected recordings and exports convert normally. The first conversion of this format downloads an extra decoder of about 30 MB, and your browser keeps it for later. Only the decoder is downloaded. Your file is never uploaded. Convert a short file first to confirm that your browser can decode it, then run the rest as a batch and download the ZIP. Keep the original WMV until you have listened to the MP3 from beginning to end.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert WMV to MP3 without uploading the file?

Does WMV to MP3 change the sound quality?
Converting WMV audio to MP3 is a second lossy step for most sources, so match or exceed the source quality instead of going lower. Keep the original file as your master.
Why does my WMV file fail to convert to MP3?
WMV files protected by Windows Media DRM cannot be opened by any browser tool. Unprotected recordings and exports convert normally.
All processing runs locally in your browser memory via WebAssembly and Web Audio. Files never leave your device. Built-in peak limiting prevents audio clipping.
