Why extract audio from a video

Lectures, webinars, interviews, and music videos are often more useful as audio. An MP3 fits on any phone, plays with the screen off, and is a fraction of the size. Extracting the soundtrack is also the first step in transcribing a recording or cleaning up the sound of a video.

    Nothing is uploaded

Large video files are slow and risky to upload. Here the file is opened from your disk, the audio is read from it in pieces, and the MP3 is written in your browser tab. This is fast on a modern laptop and works on recent phones, although a very long video uses memory while it runs.

    Which track you get

Video files can hold several audio tracks, such as multiple languages or separate microphone and desktop recordings. The primary track is converted. If you need another one, re-save the video with that track as the first, or record to one mixed track next time.

    Editing the sound afterwards

After the MP3 is made, you can use the silence remover to cut long pauses, the volume booster to raise a quiet recording, or the MP3 tag editor to add a title and cover image.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I extract audio from a video without uploading it?

Choose the video here. Your browser reads the audio track directly from the file on your device and encodes the MP3 locally, so a private recording never leaves your computer.

Which video formats work for video to MP3?

MP4, M4V, MOV, WEBM, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, MPG, and 3GP. Common formats use your browser. AVI, WMV, FLV, and MPG use an extra decoder that downloads once.

Why is the MP3 shorter or longer than my video?

It should match. If it does not, the video probably has a delayed audio track or several tracks. Only the primary track is exported.

Is there a size limit when extracting audio from a video?

There is no upload limit because nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded in your browser’s memory, so the tool warns above 150 MB: very long files may be slow or fail on a phone, and a computer handles them better.

    100% In-Browser Audio Processing

All processing runs locally in your browser memory via WebAssembly and Web Audio. Files never leave your device. Built-in peak limiting prevents audio clipping.
