Extract the soundtrack from an MP4 video
MP4 is the most common video container. Turning it into an MP3 is useful for lectures you want to listen to, music videos, recorded webinars, and screen recordings where only the narration matters. The audio is extracted from the primary track, so the video itself is never decoded and the file is not uploaded. Files with the .m4v extension use the same container and work here too.
Longer videos and bitrates
The conversion reads the file from disk in pieces, but encoding still takes processor time, roughly proportional to the length of the video. A one-hour lecture at 128 kbps becomes an MP3 of about 58 MB. Choose 192 kbps for music videos. If your MP4 has several audio tracks, the primary track is converted. Videos with protected streaming DRM cannot be opened by any browser tool.
Troubleshooting and tips
If you only want a short quote or song section, trim the video first, since conversion processes the whole file. Videos from screen recorders sometimes have audio on a second track. The converter uses the primary track, which is almost always the one you want. Streaming downloads protected by DRM, such as purchased movies, cannot be opened. For an edited soundtrack with silence removed, use the silence remover instead.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert an MP4 video to MP3 without uploading it?
Yes. The video is read from your device and the MP3 is created in your browser. No upload or account is involved.
Does it work for M4V files?
M4V uses the same MPEG-4 container as MP4, so unprotected M4V files work. DRM-protected store videos cannot be converted.
What if my MP4 has no sound?
The converter reports that no audio could be read. Screen recordings made without a microphone often have silent tracks.
All processing runs locally in your browser memory via WebAssembly and Web Audio. Files never leave your device. Built-in peak limiting prevents audio clipping.
