Convert 3GP to MP3 in three steps
- Choose one or more 3GP files, or try the included sample.
- Pick your MP3 bitrate and press Convert to MP3. Keep this tab open while it works.
- Listen to the preview and save individual files or download the batch as a ZIP.
Old phone recordings
3GP is a lightweight container from the early smartphone era, and many video clips or voice recordings from those devices still exist. Converting them to MP3 makes them playable on any modern device and easier to archive. Everything is processed locally, so private family recordings never leave your machine.
Check the codec
Newer 3GP files carry AAC audio and convert normally. Older phones often saved voice as AMR, a narrowband speech codec that browsers do not decode natively. For those files the page downloads a one-time extra decoder (about 30 MB) before converting; the recording itself is never uploaded. If your 3GP still fails, convert it once in a desktop app such as VLC. Expect modest audio quality from AMR sources: choose 128 kbps, because a higher bitrate cannot add detail.
Troubleshooting and tips
Voice recordings from feature phones are often only 8 kHz mono, so they will sound thin whichever format you choose. Converting to MP3 does not fix that, but it does preserve the recording for the future. Videos with the .3g2 extension, from CDMA phones, use a similar container, but they are not tested here. Keep the original 3GP file as well, because a future decoder may do better than today's.
Frequently asked questions
Why will my 3GP file not convert?
Older 3GP files often use AMR speech audio, which browsers do not decode natively. The page then fetches a one-time extra decoder (about 30 MB), so the first conversion is slower. If it still fails, convert once in a desktop player such as VLC.
Will the MP3 include the video?
No. MP3 is audio only. Keep the 3GP if you need the picture.
What bitrate suits an old phone recording?
128 kbps. These recordings were low quality to begin with, and a higher bitrate cannot add detail.
All processing runs locally in your browser memory via WebAssembly and Web Audio. Files never leave your device. Built-in peak limiting prevents audio clipping.
