    Matroska in plain terms

MKV is a flexible container used for downloads, screen recordings from tools such as OBS, and rips. It can hold several audio tracks, subtitles, and chapters. This converter reads the primary audio track and writes an MP3, which suits a lecture, a concert recording, or a gameplay commentary you want to keep without the video.

    Which MKV audio will work

The track must use a codec your browser can decode. AAC, Opus, Vorbis, FLAC, and MP3 inside MKV work in recent browsers. Dolby Digital (AC-3), E-AC-3, and DTS soundtracks, common on movie releases, are not decodable in most browsers, and the converter will say so instead of returning a silent file. In that case, re-export the audio in a desktop editor first.

    Troubleshooting and tips

Anime and film releases often include multiple language tracks. Because the first or default track is used, you may get the original language when you wanted a dub, so re-mux the file with the track you want. Subtitles and chapters are ignored. OBS recordings with separate mic and desktop tracks give you only the first track here, so record to a single mixed track if you want both in the MP3.

    Frequently asked questions

Does MKV to MP3 keep all audio tracks?

No. Only the primary audio track is exported. Re-mux the file if you need a different language track.

Why does my MKV say it cannot be decoded?

Many MKV files carry Dolby Digital or DTS audio, which browsers generally cannot decode. AAC, Opus, Vorbis, FLAC, and MP3 tracks work.

    Can I convert OBS recordings?

Yes. OBS recordings in MKV with AAC or Opus audio convert normally. Remember that MKV recordings from OBS may have separate tracks for mic and desktop sound.
