When AIFF to MP3 is the right move
AIFF is Apple’s uncompressed audio format, and you will meet it in Logic and GarageBand exports, sample libraries, and old Mac music collections. MP3 plays in every car stereo, phone, podcast host, and upload form, so converting closes the gap between the file you have and the tool you need. Everything stays on your device while it runs, so private recordings never reach a server.
What happens to the audio inside
The converter opens the AIFF file and reads uncompressed PCM audio, usually 16-bit or 24-bit. It decodes that audio and writes an MP3 at the bitrate you choose, which is small enough to email. Converting AIFF audio to MP3 is a second lossy step for most sources, so match or exceed the source quality instead of going lower.
Size and settings
A 192 kbps MP3 uses about 1.4 MB per minute. Choose 128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps as the all-round default, and 256 or 320 kbps for music you plan to keep. The sample rate and channel layout of your AIFF file are carried across, so a mono recording stays mono.
Troubleshooting and tips
AIFF files are large, about 10 MB per stereo minute, so a long session uses plenty of memory. A 24-bit AIFF is written as 16-bit when you convert it to WAV. The first conversion of this format downloads an extra decoder of about 30 MB, and your browser keeps it for later. Only the decoder is downloaded. Your file is never uploaded. Convert a short file first to confirm that your browser can decode it, then run the rest as a batch and download the ZIP. Keep the original AIFF until you have listened to the MP3 from beginning to end.
