VIDEO CLEANUP

Remove silence from video

Cut dead air out of talking-head videos, tutorials, and screen recordings. Picture and sound are trimmed on the same timeline, so sync holds.

Try a sample

Hear a spoken phrase with a long pause, then try shortening it.

Remove silence from a video in three steps

  1. Choose an MP4, MOV, or WEBM video, or press Try video sample.
  2. Set the threshold and minimum pause, then press Remove silence. The waveforms show what was cut.
  3. Play the preview and download the shorter video, or choose audio only for an MP3.

How silence removal works on video

The soundtrack is analysed in 10 millisecond windows. Any run of quiet windows longer than your minimum pause is shortened to the padding you set. The video is then cut along exactly the same ranges, so frames and sound stay locked together. Because the video is cut at the frame level it is a hard cut, much like a jump cut in an editor. Short crossfades smooth the joins in audio files, but they are switched off for video so sound and picture cut at the same instants.

Settings for common footage

Talking-head recordings in a quiet room work well at −35 dB with a 0.4 second pause. Screen recordings with fan or keyboard noise need a higher threshold such as −28 dB. If the tool removes breaths and the ends of words, increase the padding to 0.2 seconds. If pauses survive, shorten the minimum pause or raise the threshold.

When to use a video editor instead

This tool is a fast first pass. It does not understand words, so it cannot remove filler words such as um or tell a meaningful dramatic pause from a dead one. For fine control, use the browser tool to shrink the recording, then finish in DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, or CapCut. Our guides cover each.

Export and privacy

The file never leaves your device. MP4 export needs AAC audio encoding in your browser; if it is unavailable the tool exports WEBM. Choose audio only to get an MP3 of the shortened soundtrack.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove silence from a video without losing sync?

Use a tool that cuts the video frames and the audio along the same timestamps. That is what this page does when you keep the default video export.

Does this remove umm and uh?

No. It detects quiet sections, not words. Filler words are spoken sounds. Use a transcript-based editor for those.

Will it add a watermark or upload my video?

No. Nothing is uploaded and there is no watermark.

What video formats can I use?

MP4, MOV, and WEBM, depending on the codecs your browser can decode.

100% In-Browser Audio Processing

All processing runs locally in your browser memory via WebAssembly and Web Audio. Files never leave your device. Built-in peak limiting prevents audio clipping.
