Container versus codec
MP3 is both a compression method and a file format, and it holds audio only. WebM is a container, a wrapper that holds video or audio compressed with other codecs. A WebM video typically holds VP8, VP9, or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio. A WebM audio file holds just Opus or Vorbis. So the real comparison is Opus versus MP3, and WebM versus MP3 as wrappers.
Quality and size
Opus is a newer codec than MP3, and at low bitrates it sounds better. A voice recording at 32 to 64 kbps in Opus can sound as clear as an MP3 at 96 or 128 kbps. At high bitrates, the differences narrow, and both sound excellent at 192 kbps and above. If quality at small size matters, Opus in WebM or Ogg is a strong choice. If universal playback matters, MP3 is.
Compatibility
MP3 plays in every phone, car, browser, podcast host, and editor. WebM audio plays in modern browsers and many players, but many car stereos, older devices, and editing programs do not recognise it. Some upload forms accept only MP3 or WAV. That is the main reason people convert WebM recordings: not because MP3 sounds better, but because MP3 opens everywhere.
Where WebM files come from
Browser voice recorders, screen recorders, video-call tools, and web players often save WebM because browsers can record it natively. If you recorded a meeting or voice note in the browser, you probably have a WebM or Opus file. Chrome typically records WebM, while Safari records M4A.
How to convert, and the quality trade-off
Both are lossy, so converting WebM to MP3 re-compresses the audio and adds a small additional loss. Choose a bitrate at least as high as the original. For speech, 128 kbps is plenty. For music, use 192 to 256 kbps. If you plan to edit the audio, convert to WAV instead, which is uncompressed and does not add more loss. Both conversions run in your browser, with no upload.
Which should you pick?
Record in whichever format your tool provides, keep the original, and convert to MP3 when you need to share or upload. Use WAV for editing and archiving the decoded audio. Choose WebM or Opus only when you control the playback environment and want the smallest high-quality files.
